Leisure
Romans did not have that much leisure time in their lives. When they did, they would do different activities. From watching chariot races and gladiator battles to going to public baths and reading. Here are some of the other things they did in their free time:
- Swimming: This was the most common activity among the Roman boys. They would go to the Tiber River, swim, socialize, and most importantly relax.
- Reading: Romans did have libraries and for those who could read, it was usually their hobby. Books were not allowed to be borrowed but could be read by anyone. The books were hand written by slaves who had this labour as their job.
- Wrestling: You've probably have heard of the gladiator fights. Many Romans use to go the colosseum to watch the prisoners, slaves, or criminals fight each other. They thought this was entertaining. These bloody fights were to give fear to the women and children of the consequences of breaking the law.
- Public Baths: This was probably the most relaxing. Their homes did not have their own baths so they would have to go the only baths there were in the city, which were the public ones. This was not only for bathing but a great place to socialize as well.
-Literature: Most of ancient Romes's literature is from the Greeks. Round the 4th and 3rd centuries, Rome as influenced by Italy's literature. It was written in the Latin language. They wrote epic stories of their military battles, comedies, and poetry. Form the 1st century to mid-1st century, it was the best time of literature. Catullus took Greek lyrical verse and formed it into a poem. An example of a famous poet is Virgil, and Horace. Horace a poem called the carmina. This is a poem about friendship, love, and loyalty.
-Theatre: Compared to the Greeks, Romans really stepped it up a bit. Greek plays rarely had bloody act or violence on their stage. Romans on the other hand were opposites. They had a love for bloody sports like the gladiator battle in the coliseum. The more realistic the battle would be, the more the Romans enjoyed it. Romans rarely did plays and even if they did do them, they would copy from the Greeks but change a couple of things.
