Ancient Roman Economy: Jobs
Farmers
Most Romans who lived in the country side were farmers. They would plant the crops, take care of the crops, and harvest them when they were ready. They most common crop grown was wheat which was used to make bread.
Soldiers
The Roman army was large and needed a lot of soldiers. They army was a way for the poor class people to earn a wage and to gain some valuable land at the end of their service. It was a good way for the poor class people to move up to the better class people in status.
Merchants
Merchants sold and bought items and goods from all around the empire. They kept the economy rolling and kept the empire rich.
Craftsmen
Craftsmen made dishes, pots, jewellery, and weapons for the army. They were very important to the empire. Some craftsmen worked in individual shops. Others were slaves who worked in large workshops that produced items in quantities.
Lawyers, Teachers, & Engineers
Lawyers, teachers, and engineers were the educated, higher classed people.
Government
The government of Rome was huge. There were a lot of government jobs like tax collectors, clerks, and senators. Senators were wealthy and powerful. Senators served in their position for their lifetime and there were 600 members of the senate.
