Ancient Roman: Ships they used for Trading
Trading by sea was much cheaper than carrying goods over land, carts could only travel around 40 km per day. Bulkier cargo, grain, wine and stone went by ship. Merchant ships came in different shapes and sizes. Some ships were designed to transport barrels of wine, olive oil , and grain, these boats could carry more than 250 tons. Merchants mostly sailed close to the coast and made lots of stops along the way.
Come and other cities had to import large amounts of food, oi, wine and wool. Wealthy Romans expected to find goods such as incense, spices, and silk in their markets and all these came from other lands.
