The city of Rome was the capital city of the civilization of Ancient Rome. Rome was the largest city known in the ancient world. It was a civilization that began on the Italian Peninsula in 753 BC. From Rome, the heart of the government, military decisions were made, and the wealth Rome earned was invested in buildings. The city started out small, but grew as the empire grew. At one point, when the city was at its height for its power, there were over 1 million people living in the city during ancient times. The city was center of power in the world for over 1000 years.
Same as any city, Rome had its rich and poor areas. The poor could only afford to live in wooden houses which were a serious fire risk in a hot country like Italy. Lots of times, Rome suffered severe damage as a result of fires starting in the city’s slums. The slums were also dangerous places to go to if you had any money as crime was very common. The Emperor Augustus created a police force to patrol the city but the poor areas remained untamed. But, for the influential people of Rome, this wasn't that important because they never visited these areas.
